José Luis Lorente

José is a partner and head of Bird & Bird’s Finance & Financial Regulation department in the Madrid office. As head of the Finance & Financial Regulation team in the Madrid office and a member of the international Finance & Financial Regulation Group, he advises domestic and international investors and banks on transactions and regulatory requirements.

His experience covers acquisition finance, corporate facilities, project and asset finance, syndicated facilities, banking and financial regulatory dispute resolution, corporate restructurings, insolvency and distressed debt transactions. As well as transactional work, he specialises in banking, financial and insurance regulation, and provides advice to national and foreign banks and other regulated entities.

José advises on financial regulatory matters, including payment services regulation, electronic banking and virtual financial services, compliance standards and procedures before Spanish authorities. These include the Spanish Central Bank, the Spanish Securities and Exchange Commission (CNMV) and the General Directorate of Insurance and Pensions (DGS). In addition, he has in-depth experience in derivatives and other sophisticated financial products.

His particular focus is on the negotiation, restructuring and cancellation of OTC derivatives structured products under ISDA and other conventions such as CMOF in Spain. As the main contact in their Madrid aviation team, he deals regularly with transactional, regulatory and commercial matters in the aviation and defence sector. He advises domestic and foreign players on aircraft financing, purchases and operating agreements.
